Best poster award to our students from the Belgian Photonics Meetup

Undergraduate students Tarık Tekoğlu, Enes Altay Nohutcuoğlu, and Ali Yağız Uğurveren, participated in research activities at the Advanced Photonics Sensors Lab, Université de Mons (UMONS), Belgium within the framework of the Erasmus program.

Under the supervision of Prof. Christophe Caucheteur and with the support of Dr. Karima Chah and Dr. Damien Kinet, and B-Sens, our students worked on embedding FBG sensors into glass fiber composite beams and investigating their performance through 3-point bending tests. The collected data were then used to develop a deep learning-based model capable of predicting crack initiation in advance. This approach has shown strong potential as an effective method for real-time structural health monitoring.

The results of this study were presented on September 19, 2025, at the bePOM (Belgian Photonics Online Meetup) 2025 event organized by Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where their poster was awarded the “Best Poster Award.”

We congratulate our students on their dedication and this remarkable achievement.
